Two super wallet friendly cleaning products you can make at home
It is pretty satisfying to create your own cleaning products at home. And not just satisfying, but they work just as effective as their store-bought counterparts. Also, the good news is: they tend to cost next to nothing so you have the chance to create your own range of eco friendly products from the comfort of your home, with ingredients you most likely will find in your cupboards.
When it comes to a clean home, we identified two main areas that cause the most headache: your shower/ bath tub and the kitchen counters. So we searched and tested some recipes and came up with two of our favourites. We really enjoy creating our own recipes and we hope you will enjoy re-creating them at home, too!
Kitchen counter cleaner
Ingredients:
3.4 oz water – we used some filtered water from our Brita jug
3.4 oz vinegar – we used white vinegar, although this is the most aggressive of all, it gives a clean look to your final product
1 tablespoon of washing up liquid – we used our favourite Fairy lemon for a bit of an extra citrusy scent
juice from half a lemon
10 drops of eucalyptus oil – we used doTERRA’s
The method:
Mix all of the above in a mixing bowl. Then use a small sieve to fill up a bottle – we used the sieve to keep the lemon’s pulp out of our final product. Our bottle was an old glass bottle with a screw finish, this will fit almost any spray head of the same size as your bottle’s mouth.
How to use:
Spray it on your countertops, or your induction cooktop and wipe it off with a damp microfibre cloth.
It worked super well for us and because of the citrusy-eucalyptus smell it felt fresh and clean in the kitchen afterwards!
Do not use on stone surfaces because of the vinegar in this mix.
Tip: shake well before every use.
Bathroom spray
A very simple and cheap, eco-friendly and effective cleaning product, that will treat the whole bathroom, and almost every surface with just 2 main ingredients.
We used it on
the taps
the sink
the shower cabin
tiles and grout
the toilet seat
sides and top of the toilet
and even the mirrors.
The method:
Mix 6.7 oz (2dl) boiled water that you let cool down to lukewarm and 3 tablespoons of citric acid in a mixing bowl and fill up a screw top bottle with your mixture. If you have a few drops of clean essential oil around feel free to use that too, although this step is optional.
How to use:
spray liberally on the surface you would like to us it on, let it sit for 1-5 minutes, then scrub it a bit with a non-scratch scrub sponge and rinse/wipe with clean water.
Tip #1: use an old toothbrush for difficult to reach spots and corners
Tip #2: use an old T-shirt or cotton fabric to wipe the surfaces dry for an even shinier finish.
